Testsealabs AFP Alpha-Fetoprotein Test
Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP)
Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) is normally produced by the fetal liver and yolk sac. It is one of the first alpha-globulins to appear in mammalian sera during embryonic development and is a dominant serum protein in early embryonic life. AFP reappears in adult serum during certain pathologic states.
An increased level of AFP in the blood is an indicator of liver cancer; high levels of AFP are found in the bloodstream when liver tumors are present. A normal AFP level is less than 25 ng/mL, while AFP levels often exceed 400 ng/mL in the presence of cancer.
Measurement of AFP levels in the bloodstream via the Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) Test has been used as an early detection tool for hepatocellular carcinoma. The test is based on immunochromatography and can yield results within 15 minutes.
