Cryptosporidium
Cryptosporidium is a diarrhoeal disease caused by microscopic parasites of the genus Cryptosporidium. These parasites live in the intestine and are excreted in the stool.
A key feature of the parasite is its outer shell, which enables it to survive outside the body for extended periods and makes it highly resistant to chlorine-based disinfectants. Both the disease and the parasite are commonly referred to as "Crypto."
Transmission of Crypto occurs through:
- Ingestion of contaminated water.
- Contact with fomites (contaminated objects) contaminated by coughs from an infected individual.
- The fecal-oral route, similar to other gastrointestinal pathogens.
