Testsealabs Legionella Pneumophila Antigen Test
Legionnaires' Disease Caused by Legionella pneumophila
Legionnaires pneumophila is a serious form of pneumonia with a mortality rate of approximately 10-15% in otherwise healthy individuals.
Symptoms
- Initially presents as a flu-like illness.
- Progresses to a dry cough and frequently develops into pneumonia.
- Approximately 30% of infected individuals may experience diarrhoea and vomiting.
- Around 50% may show signs of mental confusion.
Incubation Period
The incubation period typically ranges from 2 to 10 days, with illness onset most commonly occurring 3 to 6 days after exposure.
Disease Patterns
Legionnaires’ disease can manifest in three forms:
- Outbreaks involving two or more cases, linked to limited temporal and spatial exposure to a single source.
- A series of independent cases in highly endemic areas.
- Sporadic cases with no obvious temporal or geographical grouping.
Notably, outbreaks have repeatedly occurred in buildings such as hotels and hospitals.
Diagnostic Test: Legionella Pneumophila Antigen Test
This test enables early diagnosis of Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 infection by detecting a specific soluble antigen in the urine of affected patients.
- The serogroup 1 antigen can be detected in urine as early as three days after symptom onset.
- The test is rapid, providing results within 15 minutes.
- It uses a urine specimen, which is convenient for collection, transport, and detection—both in early and later stages of the disease.
