Nipah Virus (NiV) Nucleic Acid Detection Kit (PCR-Fluorescence Probing)
Nipah Virus (NiV): Key Facts & Detection Kit Purpose
What Is Nipah Virus (NiV)?
Nipah virus (NiV) is an emerging zoonotic virus that causes severe, life-threatening illnesses:
- Targeted systems: Attacks the central nervous system and respiratory system, damaging organs like the brain, heart, kidneys, and lungs.
- Clinical manifestations:Fatality rate: Up to 40-70% for NiV-induced encephalitis.
- Neurological symptoms: Fever, severe headache, muscle pain (myalgia), tremors, convulsions, meningitis, and coma.
- Respiratory symptoms: Cough.
Transmission & Incubation
- Transmission route: Spreads from animals (primarily pigs) to humans via contact with infected animals’ secretions, excretions, or exhaled gases.
- Incubation period: ~1–3 weeks.
- Symptom variability:
- Severe cases: Drowsiness/confusion within 24–48 hours, progressing to coma.
- Asymptomatic cases: Some individuals show no symptoms but test positive for NiV antibodies (seropositive).
Purpose of This Detection Kit
This kit is designed for the qualitative detection of Nipah virus nucleic acids in three specimen types:
- Urine
- Oropharyngeal (throat) swabs
- Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
