Testsealabs PCP Phencyclidine Test
Phencyclidine (PCP): Overview and Testing Parameters
Phencyclidine, also known as PCP or "angel dust," is a hallucinogen first marketed as a surgical anesthetic in the 1950s. It was later removed from the market due to adverse effects, including delirium and hallucinations in patients.
Forms and Administration
- PCP is available in powder, capsule, and tablet form.
- The powder is often snorted or smoked after mixing with marijuana or vegetable matter.
- While most commonly administered via inhalation, it can also be used intravenously, intranasally, or orally.
Effects
- At low doses, users may exhibit rapid thinking and behavior, alongside mood swings ranging from euphoria to depression.
- A particularly devastating effect is self-injurious behavior.
Detection in Urine
- PCP becomes detectable in urine within 4 to 6 hours of use.
- It remains detectable for 7 to 14 days, with variability depending on factors such as metabolic rate, age, weight, activity level, and diet.
- Excretion occurs as unchanged drug (4% to 19%) and conjugated metabolites (25% to 30%).
Testing Standards
The PCP Phencyclidine Test yields a positive result when urine concentrations of phencyclidine exceed 25 ng/mL. This cutoff is the suggested screening standard for positive specimens set by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA, USA).
